From Irish, Scottish and Icelandic folklore, selkies or seal people have been apart of sea faring cultures for several centuries. With its similar counterpart mermaids, selkies are shapeshifters that shed their seal skin and emerge on land in human form to lure unsuspecting men, or women, to fall in love with them. But the only way a person can control a selkie is to hide their seal skin so that they stay in their human form forever. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum operated for over a hundred years from 1864 to 1994 as a state owned psychiatric hospital in West Virginia. Well intended like most 18th and 19th century state mental asylums, it quickly became overpopulated and underrun which led to brutal practices such as locking unruly patients in cages and performing forced lobotomies. Since 2007 it has been open for tours and ghost hunts where many have reported strange occurrences from the patients that still reside and refuse to leave.
